We visited Lewis and Harris in September 2008. These windswept islands have a distinct Norse flavour, with settlements rather than villages, and an ancient layout of land ownership. Gaelic is spoken widely here.
Sweeping, deserted beaches, pristine white sands, vast expanses of peaty wilderness, magnificent Atlantic breakers and an awe-inspiring legacy of prehistoric monuments. On Lewis, we had our closest ever encounter with a golden eagle. Just amazing!
